I originally titled this painting "The Crossing" because, for me, it elicits ideas about death and transformation.  In Tarot, the death card represents the end of one chapter and the start of a new.  Usually, in the decks I've seen, Death rides a horse and carries a white banner.  I see that in this painting.  I decided later to simply call it "Death".  The title is more stark and more directly references the card.  I used to prefer my titles to keep a bit ambiguous - I didn't want to influence the individual viewer's experience with the art.  But I'm lately feeling like my own interpretation adds context to the art.
